Overview

NutriFit is a nutrition and fitness tracker designed especially for older adults of the Mecklenbeurg county (county in North Carolina). It lets older adults track their daily meals and food habits, exercise schedule, and track progress over a period of time.

The web application is designed by my company for the Mecklenburg county Health Department to create awareness for health among the older adults of the county. Although, it has been designed keeping the older adults of the Mecklenburg county in mind, it can be used by older adults anywhere.

As the only designer of the group, I tried my best to constantly collaborate with the client and development teams.

Research

I researched about the causes of poor health in the county and what could be done to create awareness about it. Attached below are screenshots from the 2019 Mecklenburg County Community Health Assessment report which amongst other things specifies that more than 50% of adults in the county are either overweight or obese. It also states that obesity increases a person's chances of getting cancer and that cancer has been the leading cause of death (as of 2017).

User Personas

Competitive Analysis

Based on the research done until this point, I found out that most applications in the market are either fitness trackers (like Nike Run Club and Google Fit) or calorie intake trackers or nutrition trackers (like Cronometer, Cardiogram and Lifesum). According to my findings, there does not exist any mobile or web application that does both. NutriFit is a comprehensive application that lets older adults track their daily food habits and exercise schedule in a single application.

Research Takeaway

We realized that most of the older adults did not know how to manage their eating habits and either had no way of keeping track of their daily workouts or had no motivation to exercise at all. From the competitive analysis, I found out that older adults needed one solution to keep track of everything. Also, we knew it had to be a device that they could carry with them while traveling or a web application that they could open on any device.

What I Learned

Design like a developer
Not only must the designer empathize with the users but also understand the team. It becomes easy to explain the design to developers if you know what problems they face.
Understand user demographics
Empathizing with users and ideating on solutions must keep in mind their age, background, gender, income and other such demographics too.
